Threats & Organic Markets
The secret of the economic success of naturally evolving, organic and self-organized markets is that these have NOT been planned under the rigid controls of the State (read: Solomon Benjamin, Neighborhood as Factory). Attempts to reorganize and control naturally evolved and community managed markets tends to destroy their innovative and affordable nature and interfere with their inter-meshing networks of livelihood that make them work for the poor. In cities like London, Barcelona and Paris – the State’s agencies (municipal bodies or other specialized departments) do best to support these markets by providing a range of services to traders and their associations, facilitating access by public transportation, and celebrating such spaces to attract more tourists and visitors in brochures, websites, maps and guidebooks. Moreover, organic markets are treated as sites of intangible cultural heritage the world over (Barcelona has aided in declaring some of its historical markets as UNESCO heritage sites).
