Threatened Livelihoods at the Gujari Bazaar

The research conducted into the Riverfront Project showed no clear plans for the relocation of this market, and all our findings indicated a severe threat to the livelihoods of the thousands of individuals and families associated with the market, as well as their exclusion from decision-making processes about the future of the market.

Newspaper articles (see the timeline) were one of the main links providing information as to what would happen to the bazaar and how due to the revamping of the river front the bazaar would change. Many questions arise like whether the current vendors of the Gujari would get the space to sell their wares, where this market would be located, etc. These pictures providing a glimpse of the ‘new look’ for the bazaar appear to be completely lacking the essence, that is an integral feature of the market.

For instance, it would not be possible in any way for the people at the bazaar to adapt to the fixed stall based design. Only a community driven design would work in this situation; one which would envelop the needs of all the people of the bazaar – shopkeepers, vendors, customers etc, along with the requirements suitable for the River front.
