Spatial Organization
The Gujari Bazaar is conveniently located in the Ahmedabad city centre. The market is accessed along a ramp adjacent to a Victorian bridge (Ellis Bridge) descending from the easte side of Ellis Bridge to the open banks of the Sabarmati River, a river which connects East to West, and the “Old” to the “New” Ahmedabad. Due to the proximity of the market to local and interstate bus stops and the Ahmedabad Main Railway Station, the Gujari Bazaar is accessible to people travelling from within the city as well as those in neighboring districts and towns. Most traders reside in a 4 kilometer radius of the market, in Easte Ahmedabad, and customers who visit the market come from all over the city, both East and West, as well as from neighboring villages and towns and states. The market has always been a major draw for foreign visitors interested in participating in Ahmedabad’s community life.
While once the market’s area extended approximately 1 square kilometer west behind Victoria Garden, passing the Mahalakshmi temple around Mehmud Begada’s city wall to Sabarmati riverbed. Now, for the last 3 years, this space has been almost halved sue to the concrete barriers of the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project. The nearest public restroom facilities are available adjacent to Victoria Garden.

Hand Cart

Most vendors transport their good to the Gujari Bazaar by hand cart. Many traders will use their hand cart to display their goods; some prefer to lay out their goods on ground coverings instead.
Cycle Cart

Many traders who set up their goods on charpais or on the ground generally transport their goods to and from the Gujari Bazaar via cycle cart. The cart is parked for the duration of the market.
Auto Rickshaw
Vendors travelling long distances to reach the market transport their goods by auto Rickshaw or similar 3-wheeled mini-carts.
